Final:Artist Interview

For my final I decided to interview a junior photographer for The Ridgewood Post. On Decemember 7th I sat down with photographer Corinne Philippou. I met up with Corinne at The Ridgewood Post office in Catalpa,New York. We sat at her desk and she began to show me her portfolio and she was nice enough to let me borrow two of her works(via email) to use for my blog post. After, receiving the pictures the interview had begun. I asked her what was her job title was and how long has she had been in that position? She had responded "I've been the junior photographer for The Ridgewood Post for almost two years now(laughs). I had then asked her What her best work was in New York and why did she think it was the best. She had told me "My best work and most funnest work would have to be a photo shoot I had done in Central Park when I had first started working here(at the post). It was me and two other girls and we were assigned to snap pictures of scenery and whoever had the best photographs, there picture would be used in the paper. I didn't win that little contest but I had alot of fun." I then asked her What defines success to her in New York? She responded "I guess if someone doesn't give up on their dreams and work hard I guess you could say that is what makes New York successful". I asked how long has she had the interest of being a photographer? She responded "Ever since i got my hands on a vintage polaroid camera from the 80's sinceI was about 8 years old. since then my love for photography has not changed." then asked her "Do you have any inspirations? Any mentors? She responded "I am inspired by photographer Terry Richardson, he takes so many photos of celebrities that he himself has become a celebrity. As far as mentors I guess you can count the lead photographer of the post Ben Blink." I ended the interview by asking her if she had any advice for any young photographers or aspiring photographers? She responded "Don't give up, and don't take no for an answer."

David Smith At The Whitney

David Ronald Smith was born on March 9,1906 and passed away on May 23, 1965. He was an American
Abstract Expressionist sculptor and painter, best known for creating large steel abstract geometric
sculptures. Some of David Smith’s sculptures can be found at The Whitney Museum here in New York
City. Today I went to the Whitney Museum because they were holding an exhibition that had a few
sculptures from David Smith’s collection. One piece that grabbed my attention in particular was a metallic
sculpture entitled “Cu-bi Six”. This piece was composed in complete steel. It was first sculpted in nineteen
sixty four for the Israel Museum in Israel. It was brought to New York for David Smith’s exhibition
entitled “David Smith:Cubes and Anarchy”. This sculpture took fours to complete and is said to be on of
the most fragile sculptures David Smith has sculpted. It has two solid cubes on each end of the sculpture
has well as a long metal pole connecting the cubes. There is a solid metallic sphere holds up the sculpture
as well as a long “L” shaped figure on its side. I think this sculpture draws the attention of many viewers
because it shows how well David Smith uses solid and three dimensional figures in an artistic matter. I
thought that this exhibit was very interesting and it inspired me to get more interested in sculptures.

Nine Eleven Memorial

Visiting the nine eleven memorial was very moving for me. It brought back memories from when I was a child and hearing about the terrorist attack and watching everyone become terrified and emotional. When I went to the nine eleven memorial the thing that struck me the most was the Memorial Wall which had all the deceased victims from the nine eleven attack names engraved upon metallic grey tablet that was placed on top of black marble. I felt as if this truly honored the victims and fallen heroes. It was created by Michael Arads. Apparently, Michael Arad had difficulty on how he should arrange the names on the tablets. People argued with him about how the arrangement of the names until he came into an agreement on arranging the names in order of what building they died in. “The people whose names are inscribed here are like us. They came to work that day. They went to the office buildings here in Lower Manhattan. They were on their way to take their kids to school. They were on flights across country with their families. This is a distorted picture that I drew of my friend Jessica who just so happens to be sitting beside me reading what I am writing. For this picture I used one sheet of white paper along with olive green and baby blue color pencils. For this art work I began with drawing the face and made her eyes and lips have massive proportions. I gave her big lips which was heavily inspired by the rapper Jay-Z

This was an ugly drawing that I drew. It is suppose to be something from the African Exhibit from The MOMA. I think the reason why it was not a successful drawing is because I seemed to have rushed through it in order to have to time to drawing everything on the checklist my teacher wanted me to draw in order to fill up my sketchpad. I think the picture cold have been better if I took my time drawing it and also if I used pen because I think the pen would brought out the shadw and details of the African figure

This is a picture of a painting of an inanimate object I had to do for class. It is a green derby hat that I was going to wear for my costume on halloween. For this assignment I used a "9 x 11" canvas, and used purple, green, white, and black paint. I wanted the landscape of my painting to be pure purple so then it could make the image of the derby hat seem as if it were floating or would simply draw the viewers attention.
